Linda Burek

Linda Burek is an award-winning photographer and author of 7 books including Birding Hot Spots Near St. Augustine, Basic Guide to Backyard Birds in St. Augustine, and Basic Guide to Birds Found Near Water in St. Augustine. She is a board member of the Saint Augustine Camera Club and a member of the Beaches Photography Club and the North American Nature Photography Association. She was the lead on a camera club Through the Lens Challenge in partnership with the Guana-Tolomato-Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve to document, through photography, as many life forms as possible found in the reserve during a specific period. Linda is a certified Florida Master Naturalist and was the lead compiler for the St. Augustine Christmas Bird Count 2018-2021. She participates in weekly counts of nesting birds at the St. Augustine Alligator Farm and Zoological Park. She served on the Board of Directors for the St. Johns Audubon Society and led bird walks. She taught about local bird identification in the Flagler College Lifelong Learning Program and at the GTM Reserve. Her website is www.landrtravels.com.

Description: This session will introduce local birding hot spots in the St. Augustine area which are easily accessible public places. Linda will share information on some of the birds that can be seen at these locations and what time of year.

Identifying Birds Found Near Water in St. Augustine

Description: This session will introduce some of the common bird species found near water in the St. Augustine area and some public places where they can reliably be seen. Linda will share tips on how to identify these birds.

Photographing Birds at Anastasia State Park

Field Workshop 

Meeting Location: Anastasia State Park, 300 Anastasia Park Rd.

Price: $50 + Park Entry ($8 per vehicle)

Difficulty Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Description: Anastasia State Park is a great location to see herons, gulls, egrets, ospreys, pelicans, shorebirds, black skimmers, and other birds. The late afternoon/early evening sun will cast a golden light on the subjects. Linda will help participants identify the birds and provide guidance on photographing them.

Suggested Gear List: Any kind of camera will work but the best pictures of birds will require a telephoto lens at 200 mm or longer.

Bird Identification & Photographing Birds Near Water at Fort Mose Historic State Park

Birding & Photo Walk

Meeting Location: Fort Mose Historic State Park, 15 Fort Mose Trail

Description: Fort Mose Historic State Park offers a boardwalk over the salt marsh, a boardwalk next to a kayak launch, and mature trees by the visitor center. This offers a variety of habitats to see herons, egrets, sandpipers, roseate spoonbills, woodland birds, bald eagles, ospreys, hawks and more. Linda will help participants identify the birds they see and provide guidance on taking photographs.

Suggested Gear List: Any kind of camera will work but the best pictures of birds will require a telephoto lens at 200 mm or longer.

Bird Identification & Photographing Birds Near Water at the GTM

Birding & Photo Walk

Meeting Location: GTM Visitor Center and Dam, 505 Guana River Rd.

Price: $75

Difficulty Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Max No People: 10

Description: Behind the GTM Visitor Center and along the adjacent Guana River and Lake by the dam, a variety of birds can be seen including gulls, terns, herons, egrets, osprey, pelicans, oystercatchers, and others. Linda will help participants identify the birds they see and provide guidance on taking photographs.

Photographing Sunrise on a Coquina Beach

Field Workshop 

Meeting Location: River to Sea Preserve, 9805 N Ocean Shore Blvd, Palm Coast

Price: $50

Description: The River to Sea Preserve has coquina rocks on the beach which makes for stunning long exposure photographs at sunrise of the sea flowing over the rocks. Linda will help participants set up their cameras to take images at this stunning Florida location.

Suggested Gear List: Landscape lens, tripod, flashlight. A remote trigger can be helpful but not required.
